What Do I Need on My Final?

Enter your current grade, your final’s weight, and your goal.

A final grade calculator works backward from your target course grade. Subtract the weighted contribution of your current average from the target, then divide by the final exam weight. Use your current grade before the final and express the weight as a decimal in the formula.

Example: An 85% current grade, 20% final, and 88% target require (88 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 100% on the final.

THE MATH BEHIND IT

(Target − current × remaining weight) ÷ final weight

A few possible outcomes

Find a target that works for you

Each scenario combines your current average with a possible final exam score. The initial examples use an 85% current grade and a 20% final weight. Change the inputs above to update these scenarios. The three result types below explain what a reachable, above 100%, or already-secured target means.

60% on final 80%course grade
70% on final 82%course grade
80% on final 84%course grade
90% on final 86%course grade
100% on final 88%course grade

WHAT YOUR RESULT MEANS

Three ways to interpret your final exam target

Within reach: the required final score is between 0% and 100%

Current 85%, final weight 20%, target 86%: (86 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 90% required.

This is the percentage you need to earn on the final exam itself, not another course-average target. With an 85% current average and a final worth 20%, a 90% final produces 85 × 0.8 + 90 × 0.2 = 86% overall.

If the exam is worth 50 points, 90% means 45 points. Check the exam’s total and any rounding rule before converting the required percentage into marks. The calculation assumes your current average excludes the final.

Above 100%: the target needs extra credit or another change

Current 85%, final weight 20%, target 90%: (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110% required.

Your completed coursework contributes 85 × 0.8 = 68 percentage points. A 90% goal needs another 22 points from a final that contributes at most 20 under normal scoring. That is why the required exam score is 110%, while a perfect 100% exam produces only 88% overall.

The calculator reports the mathematical gap; it does not assume your instructor offers bonus marks or changes grades. Check the entered weights first, then consider the options your course policy actually permits.

  • Improve remaining coursework if revisions or additional graded work are still allowed; then recalculate using the updated current average.
  • Ask your instructor whether an extra-credit opportunity exists and how it is weighted.
  • Choose a reachable target and use the possible-outcomes panel to plan for it.

Already secured: the required score is zero or less

Current 95%, final weight 20%, target 70%: (70 − 95 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = -30% required.

A negative mathematical requirement means you have already contributed enough weighted points to meet this particular target. With a 95% current average and a 20% final, even a 0% final gives 95 × 0.8 = 76% overall, above a 70% target. The live calculator displays 0% as the minimum score needed.

This result is not permission to skip the exam. Your school may require attendance, an attempted final, or a minimum exam score to pass regardless of the weighted average. Check those requirements in your syllabus or with your instructor.

WHO IT HELPS & HOW TO USE IT

How to use final grade

For students estimating a final exam target and comparing possible final scores side by side.

  1. Enter the average for all non-final coursework. It must exclude the final, including any placeholder zero for it.
  2. Enter the final’s syllabus weight (greater than 0% and at most 100%) and your target overall percentage.
  3. Read the required final score and compare the five possible exam outcomes. Change the current grade or weight to update every scenario.

Before you rely on the result: This model has one remaining final. If other work is unfinished, account for it first. It does not apply curves, dropped scores, minimum-exam rules, or school-specific rounding.

UNDERSTAND YOUR RESULT

Work backward from your target course grade

Required final = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight

Your current grade must represent all non-final coursework under your syllabus rules, excluding the final and any placeholder zero for it. Enter the final’s percentage weight and your target overall percentage. If other assignments are unfinished, account for them first.

For an 84% current grade, a final worth 40%, and a 90% overall target, (90 − 84 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 99%. This assumes the current 84% covers the other 60% of the course.

With an 85% current average and a final worth 20%, reaching 90% requires 110% on the exam. A perfect 100% final would produce an 88% course grade.

What Do I Need on My Final: frequently asked questions

Why does it say I need more than 100%?

The target cannot be reached with a normal 100% final under these weights. Check your inputs and syllabus, consider a lower target, or ask your instructor about extra-credit policies.

Which current grade should I enter for the final exam?

Use the average for all non-final coursework under your course’s grading rules, not one recent test score. If the gradebook includes a placeholder zero for the final, exclude that zero and recompute the non-final average. Other unfinished assignments must be accounted for first.

I have 84%, and my final is worth 40%. What do I need for 90% overall?

You need 99% on the final: (90 − 84 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = 99. This assumes your 84% represents all the other 60% of the course, with no additional grading adjustments.

Can I compare different final exam scores?

Yes. The five scenarios show the overall grade for final scores of 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%. Change your current grade or final weight to update all five results together.

Why might this differ from my school’s final grade?

Check that the same coursework, category weights, missing-work policy, dropped scores, curves, minimum exam rules, and rounding are used. This calculator assumes one remaining final and does not automatically apply those additional policies.

What if I already secured my target?

A required exam score of zero or less means a zero would still meet the target under these weights. Your school may still require attendance or a minimum exam score.
