Calculate high school GPA with a standard 4.0 map and optional Honors/AP/IB weighting.
HS GPA formula & example
Calculate high school GPA with a standard 4.0 map and optional Honors/AP/IB weighting.
Example: English A (4.0), AP Biology B+ (3.3+1.0=4.3), Honors Algebra A− (3.7+0.5=4.2), History B (3.0) → unweighted 3.500; weighted 3.875 (equal credits).
What is the difference between unweighted and weighted high school GPA?
Unweighted uses the standard 4.0 letter map for every course. Weighted adds +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB on that map (capped at 5.0 in this tool). Your district may use different bumps.
How should I enter semester courses?
Add one row per semester course (or per year if your school averages yearly). Use the credits/semesters field if some courses count more than others; otherwise leave credits at 1.
Does this match my school’s weighted scale?
Many US high schools use Honors +0.5 and AP/IB +1.0 on a 4.0 base, but policies vary. Always check your counseling office’s scale for transcripts and college apps.
Can I see both GPAs at once?
Yes. The result card always shows unweighted and weighted GPA; the toggle only chooses which number is featured as primary.
Is this the same as a college GPA calculator?
No. College GPA usually weights by credit hours without Honors/AP bumps. Use the college GPA calculator for university coursework.
Why might colleges recalculate my GPA?
Many colleges recompute GPA with their own course lists and weighting rules. Treat this as a planning estimate.
