LESS BUSYWORK. MORE TEACHING.

Gradebook Calculator Online

Add your scores and weights. Your grade updates as you go.

A gradebook calculator combines assignment percentages and their weights into one course average. Divide each earned score by its possible points, multiply by its weight, and divide the sum by the entered weight total.

Example: Homework 85% worth 40% and exams 78% worth 60% give 85 × 0.4 + 78 × 0.6 = 80.8%, a B on the standard A–F scale.

WHO IT HELPS & HOW TO USE IT

How to use the weighted gradebook

For students checking a course average, and teachers combining syllabus categories.

  1. Enter one row per weighted category or individually weighted assignment. Use its earned and possible points.
  2. Enter each syllabus weight once. Choose your grading scale; enable extra credit only if the course permits it.
  3. Read your current average, save a snapshot on this device, or export CSV. Use Plan your final grade to try exam outcomes.

Before you rely on the result: Weights are normalized to the entered total. Exclude ungraded work; zero is a real score. Dropped scores, curves, attendance rules, and category-specific policies are not applied automatically.

How your weighted course grade is calculated

Weighted grade = Σ(earned ÷ possible × weight) ÷ Σ(weights) × 100

Each row represents a weighted assignment or a course category. Divide earned points by possible points, multiply by that row’s weight, then divide the sum by the total entered weight.

Homework at 90% with a 20% weight and an exam at 60% with a 30% weight give (90 × 20 + 60 × 30) ÷ 50 = 72%. This is your average for the completed 50% of the course.

Use the category totals from your syllabus when a category contains several assignments. Save your gradebook in this browser or export a CSV before leaving.

Online grading calculator: what the percentage means

Your gradebook percentage describes only the assignments or categories you entered. A gradebook with 50% of the course weight entered shows your average for that work, not the contribution of the ungraded half.

Keep your gradebook aligned with the syllabus: combine assignments within each weighted category, then enter that category once. For a course based on total points, compare the two models before choosing a calculator.

GOOD QUESTIONS. STRAIGHT ANSWERS.

Gradebook Calculator Online: frequently asked questions

How does a gradebook calculator calculate weighted grades?

Divide the sum of each assignment percentage multiplied by its weight by the total entered weight. For example, 85% at 40% weight and 78% at 60% weight give 80.8%, a B on the standard scale.

Do my weights have to add up to 100%?

No. Entered weights are normalized. If they total 50%, the result is your current average for that half of the course. It does not predict the remaining work. A total above 100% also produces a normalized average; check your syllabus for accidental duplicate weights.

Should each row be an assignment or a category?

Use one row per weighted item in your syllabus. If homework has one shared weight, combine its earned and possible points in one homework row instead of giving every assignment the full category weight.

What if an assignment is not graded yet?

Leave it out until its score is known. Entering zero means you earned no points and lowers your average.

Can I enter decimal points and weights?

Yes. Earned points, possible points, and weights accept decimals. Enable Allow extra credit when earned points exceed possible points.

How are letter grades assigned to my course average?

The default thresholds are A at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, and D at 60%. You can select plus/minus or custom thresholds. Letters use the original percentage before display rounding.

Where is my gradebook saved, and can I use it on another device?

Your saved gradebook stays in this browser profile and does not sync across devices. Save gradebook stores an explicit snapshot. Restore saved reloads it; clearing browser data removes it. Export CSV to keep a separate copy.

Where should I calculate a course based on total points?

Use the grading calculator page for total points. It adds all earned points and divides by all possible points. This gradebook page uses assignment or category weights instead.

Can I work out what I need on the final exam?

The final grade calculator accepts your current course average, target grade, and final exam weight. Use Plan your final grade to carry your current result into that tool.

Are my assignment scores uploaded?

No. Calculations and saved gradebooks stay in your browser. No account is required. Exported CSV files are stored wherever you choose to save them.
