Grade Curve Calculator

Curve raw class scores toward a target mean, a new min/max range, or a square-root curve—then review adjusted results.

Curve methods & example

Curve raw class scores toward a target mean, a new min/max range, or a square-root curve—then review adjusted results.

Example: Scores 70 and 80 (mean 75). Target mean 85 → add 10 points → 80 and 90.

WHO IT HELPS & HOW TO USE IT

How to use the grade curve calculator

Enter or paste scores, pick a curve method, and read adjusted scores plus class stats.

  1. Enter scores individually or paste a list of numbers.
  2. Choose mean-shift, linear scale, or square-root and set the method’s parameters.
  3. Review each curved score and the before/after class summary.

Before you rely on the result: Curving policies are set by instructors and schools. This model does not enforce caps, letter cutoffs, or fairness policies automatically.

How grade curves work

Mean shift: adjusted = raw + (target mean − class mean)
Linear: map [oldMin, oldMax] → [newMin, newMax]
Square-root: adjusted = max × √(raw / max)

Mean shift preserves gaps between students. Linear scaling sets the floor and ceiling explicitly. Square-root curves help lower scores more while leaving a perfect paper perfect.

After curving, convert percentages to letters with the grading scale, or grade a single test roster with teacher grader.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Grade Curve Calculator FAQ

What is a grade curve calculator for teachers?

It adjusts raw scores so the class distribution better matches a target—raising a low mean, stretching scores between a new min and max, or applying a square-root curve. Similar classroom uses appear on teacher-oriented curve calculators.

How does the “add points to target mean” method work?

Compute the class mean, then add (target mean − current mean) to every score. Example: mean 70, target 80 → add 10 points to each student.

What is a linear scale curve?

Map the lowest raw score to a new minimum and the highest to a new maximum, scaling everyone else proportionally between those endpoints.

What is a square-root curve?

new = max × √(raw / max). It lifts lower scores more than high ones while keeping a perfect score perfect. Enter the assessment’s max possible points.

Can I paste a whole roster of scores?

Yes. Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces, or newlines, then apply. You can still edit labels and individual scores afterward.

Does curving change letter cutoffs?

This tool adjusts numeric scores only. Apply your grading scale afterward—or use the grading scale page for letter cutoffs.
